Philoptochos

Philoptochos is a word derived from the Greek words philos (friend) and ptochoi (poor), means "friend of the poor." It is a philanthropic organisation deeply rooted in the Greek Orthodox Church, dedicated to charitable giving, community service, and supporting those in need.

 

History and Mission

Between the years of 1960-1961 Archboishop Ezekiel inaugurated many institutions and committees, including the formation of the first central ladies philoptochos, with representatives from the parishes. The All Saints Philoptohos was officially launched on May 24th, 1964.
The society's mission is to provide assistance to those in need, irrespective of faith or background, while promoting philanthropy, fellowship, and Christian service.

 

Activities and Programs

The Philoptochos engages in various charitable initiatives, including:

• Raising funds to:

  • support the Parish financially

  • support and care for the needier members of the community and those of the wider Australian community

  • support public hospitals and many other charitable institutions

  • support St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College, our Monasteries and other Church institutions

• Visiting the elderly, poor, sick, widowed, and anyone else in need; in hospital, in nursing homes and their homes

• Cleaning and maintaining the Church

• Providing support to the Parish Priests with many other initiatives

Membership

Membership is open to all Orthodox Christians who wish to participate in philanthropy and service.

 

How to Get Involved

Anyone interested in supporting Philoptochos can:

• Join at their local Greek Orthodox parish committee.

• Volunteer by assisting and participating in fundraising events and community service projects.

• Make monetary or in-kind donations.

• Advocate for social causes supported by the organisation.​
